FairWarning, Inc. Signs Agreement with the University of Florida
to Tackle
Emerging Information Security Challenges

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – (Aug. 30, 2005) -- FairWarning, Inc. has reached an agreement whereby University of Florida faculty will collaborate with FairWarning to develop solutions for emerging challenges in the commercial marketplace.

FairWarning’s software-based privacy auditing solutions help organizations track users across multiple applications and monitor for security incidents. FairWarning™ also provides reporting for systems review, which is an essential part of satisfying the regulatory compliance facing virtually every country and industry today; for example, healthcare’s HIPAA, public companies’ Sarbanes Oxley, GLB for financial services, Basel II for European financial services, and PIPEDA in Canada.

Due to the Internet and other remote access technologies, access to mission critical business applications has exploded in recent years. Today it is typical for an organization’s business applications to be accessed from geographically disperse locations by customers, suppliers, partners, agents and remote employees. This has meant the emergence of a new and highly damaging security risk, misuse of information systems by a company’s known users. FairWarning is filling the niche for access reporting, monitoring, and automated auditing driven by user growth and the emergence of compliance requirements in information systems.
FairWarning has assembled a world-class team of information security and compliance experts to tackle emerging challenges for the first of the company’s markets, healthcare. “We are delighted to have executed this license agreement with the University of Florida,” said Kurt Long, FairWarning CEO and founder. “Access to faculty and the ability to license cutting-edge discoveries like those generated at the University of Florida is one of the essential ingredients in delivering differentiated, long-term value to our customers. The volumes of information security data our customers deal with and their need for predictive security present some unique challenges that the University of Florida research faculty is well suited to help solve.”

Prior to FairWarning, UF alumnus Kurt Long was founder and CEO of OpenNetwork Technologies, an information security company which served the Global 5000. OpenNetwork was purchased by software giant BMC Software for $18 million in April 2005.

Bruce Clary, Assistant Director of UF’s Office of Technology Licensing, worked with Long and faculty members to negotiate the licensing deal. “Our agreement with FairWarning presents a great opportunity for UF faculty from various disciplines to see their work play a role in solving an increasingly prevalent problem,” says Clary.

“As we know from recent news, inappropriate access to sensitive computer records enables people with ill-intent to exploit our privacy,” said David Day, Director of UF’s Office of Technology Licensing, “and UF is very pleased to be involved in preventing that.”
